Cotton
is one of the mostly used and comfortable thread ever because of the
softness it offers. It has good absorbency, color retention, machine
washable, dry cleanable, drapes well, good strength, sewing and
handling is easier along with elasticity.
It
is made from cellulose, a plant product with the characteristic to
shrink but not stretch.
How
it is made
- It is picked from cotton plants and compressed into large bales. These bales may contain dirt and other impurities. So, it must be cleaned as a first step.
- These bales are then broken and fibers are opened with a comb like device.
- They mixed together and cleaned later on, and treated as laps.
- These laps are put into a carding machine to separate the fibers.
- They are further processed through cleaning, combing, and sorting.
- Then comes the drawing process, where this sorted cotton is fed into series of rollers to generate a band of cotton fiber.
- It is then spun into a single thread by wounding and twisting with others.
- This thread is singed over a flame and mercerized in caustic soda. It strengthen the thread and give it a lustrous look.
- The resultant treated cotton is wound on bobbins or cones.
